Blog 1 : My Personal Philosophy of Education and Technology

My educational philosophy promotes a safe and motivating environment where copious amounts of learning takes place on a daily basis.

Technology is an excellent educational tool. In order for students to be functional members in our society they need to be familiar with the various programs and hardware, and still be flexible enough to adapt to the inevitable changes in technology.

  1. Rob, I like how you raise the point of preparing our students to not only utilize technology but to be flexible with it since technology is always changing. It makes me think about a teacher's role as teaching students to learn rather than teaching the content specifically. I hope to show my students the benefits of exploring something new in technology. If we can help our students to become life long learners and ready to discover new facets of technology, we will be successful educators.

  2. Addie's comment and your post raises the dual task of schools with respect to technology. On the one hand, teachers use technology as tools to enhance learning. On the other hand, some instruction needs to be done in technology skills. One of the open questions is where technology instruction should be done, and by whom -- classroom teacher or technology teacher?

  3. I think both the technology teacher and the classroom teacher have a responsibility to help instruct students with technology issues. We all have our limits though.

Technology can be an ugly, hairy beast sometimes. Where the classroom teacher's expertise will simply not be enough to troubleshoot the various problems that come from the various imperfections within technology, the technology teacher should be able to come in and save the day, as an expert, to fix the given issue.
